Of Rove and Shadows

It appears Karl Rove’s been subpoenaed yet again to testify before Congress about his role in the politicization of the Department of Justice, among other things, and I’m just wondering if John Conyers chose the date on purpose.  I mean, he had to have, right?  February 2nd??  Groundhog Day???  Ah, the irony is so delicious, it just has to be fattening.

Let’s leave aside the Rove-looks-like-a-fat-rodent comments for a moment (but just for a moment) and take a look at the significance of this particular festival of no import here: The groundhog comes out of his hidey hole in PA, looks for his shadow, sees it or not, and we all suddenly know how long our winter will be.

To celebrate this year, Rove will be hauling higroundhogmself out of the Haliburton-built bunker he and Cheney share, either testifying to his nefarious dealings or not, and then returning to said bunker, leaving us either heartened or depressed as to our national future.

I can’t remember the actual rules for Phil (6 weeks of winter if the groundhog sees his shadow, but 4 and a 1/2 if he sees a cat instead, I think), but the rules for Rove (and our country) seem clear: Either he acknowledges his shadowy dealings, and testifies to his involvement therein, or else he doesn’t.  The ramifications of either option are clear.  Without sunshine shining (and I mean brightly) on the mauling our Constitution has taken over the last 8 years, we will have yet more proverbial winter to look forward to.  Our hope to emerge from the deep, dark freeze lies in the fat rat (see?  I told you it’d only be a moment) seeing his shadow.  Making sure he knows the shadow is something of his own making…well, come on, kids, he’s still just a dumb animal (come and get me, PETA!).
