A New Super Band?

Huh. Well, I just don’t know. Huh.

Band Members From Hanson, Smashing Pumpkins And Cheap Trick Form New Group Called Tinted Windows.

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) – Taylor Hanson of the siblings trio Hanson is joining Smashing Pumpkin’s former guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick’s drummer Bun E. Carlos and Fountain of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger to form a new group called Tinted Windows.

The quartet have already recorded their debut album at the Stratosphere Sound Studios in New York, which Schlesinger and Iha co-own with Andy Chase of Ivy.

They will play their first major show at Billboard’s South by Southwest showcase on March 20 at Pangaea in Austin, Texas.

The LP is set to hit the stores this spring on a label that is yet to be announced, Billboard reports.

What, Ted Nugent wasn’t available?  I hear Hammer could use some cash too.

On the one hand, I’m upset that anyone from the Smashing Pumpkins is giving anyone from Fountains of Wayne or Hanson the indie cred they need to perform at SXSW. On the other, I’m heartened (and giggling) to see the word “Taint” in their name. Feh, I suppose I’ll reserve judgment on this until it becomes clear whether or not Iha’s back on the smack (and spreading it around).

While it’s taken me years to appreciate the Pumpkins’ musical prowess, on the whole, the whole band smacks of unwarranted elitism. They’re like the people who read the back of philosophy books (and have all the edgy books on their shelves, spines unbroken so you know they never read them) and then posture as though they’ve read the whole thing and when you try and call them on it, they condescend you to the point that you give up because they’re cool, insufferably cool. But intellectually shallow. And that was the 90’s in a nutshell, wasn’t it? God, how I miss the 90’s.

Hanson HAS the indie cred needed, they established their own record label, 3CG, in 2003. And they’ve played many times before in the SXSW. Google their music, info and foundation before talking. Thank you.

Yes, they are correct, Hanson was “discovered” at SXSW. Anyway Taylor Hanson is the only possible vocalist for this project, have you heard it? He is probably the best male pop vocalist there is…combined with the crunchy guitars and Carlos’ poppy-as-hell drum lines, it’s like you’re back in ’97 again (or ’79, however you want to look at it). This is my new favorite album, by a long shot. You can tell it’s made by friends having fun instead of someone desparately trying to “break out” in the music scene, or just simply make money. It really comes through and is part of what makes it such a stellar album. I hope they make more *salivates*
